Simcyp Consortium

Advancing PBPK via industry-leading scientific development and collaboration

The Simcyp Consortium

20+ Years of Innovation

Since its inception in 2001 by Professors Geoff Tucker and Amin Rostami-Hodjegan at the University of Sheffield, Simcyp, a pioneering spinout company, has been at the forefront of scientific innovation. The company introduced the Simcyp PBPK population-based simulator, which has remained a leader in physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling. After joining forces with Certara in 2012, Simcyp has continued to thrive, achieving remarkable milestones in the field.

Our Innovations:

  • World-Renowned Technology: A trusted global platform for virtualizing R&D, accelerating clinical development, and informing over 115 novel drug applications.
  • Enhanced Drug Labeling: Critical dosing recommendations for diverse patient groups including pediatric, pregnant subjects and those with organ impairment.
  • Educational Impact: Extensive training for thousands of scientists across commercial, academic, and regulatory sectors.
  • Academic Support: Awarded numerous grants and Simcyp licenses to hundreds of academic institutions.
  • Efficient Drug Development: Key technologies that streamline drug development decision-making, saving time and R&D investments.
  • Regulatory Success: Pioneering the use of PBPK in regulatory filings, with over 375 label claims achieved virtually, in lieu of performing clinical trials, utilizing the Simcyp Simulator.

Simcyp’s legacy of innovation continues to shape the future of drug development, making a lasting impact on the scientific community and beyond.

Biopharmaceutical collaboration with Simcyo Consortium

Simcyp Consortium Members

Today, 35+ biopharmaceutical companies all over the world are members of the Simcyp Consortium. As the Simcyp Consortium helps guide scientific development of the Simcyp Simulator, it ensures the software continues to meet and exceed industry needs.

Each year, the Simcyp Consortium of leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies meet to discuss the latest scientific developments in the area of modeling and simulation and guide the future development of the Simcyp Population-based Simulator.

Consultancy Services Overview

Simcyp Consultancy provides expert PBPK modeling and simulation services backed by over 200 years of combined experience in drug discovery, development and regulatory approval. Our global, 100% PhD-led team supports the application of PBPK across the R&D spectrum, including:

  • First-in-human dose projections
  • Drug-drug interaction (perpetrator and victim) modeling
  • Organ impairment modeling
  • Pediatric, pregnancy, lactation modeling
  • Formulation, food and ARA assessments

Leveraging the Simcyp Simulator, we help inform clinical trial design, answer scientific questions, and extrapolate to untested scenarios—often securing clinical trial waivers.

Our services are ideal for those needing expert guidance addressing mechanistic PK questions ensuring efficient and effective drug development outcomes.

Additionally, we offer Simcyp PBPK workshops and training sessions, open to both consortium members and the public, to educate and upskill scientists in model-based drug development.

The Simcyp team is renowned for its pioneering research and development, which is recognized globally and regularly featured at leading industry conferences and in prestigious publications. Through strong scientific collaborations, Simcyp supports academic teaching and research by providing sponsored licenses to over 110 universities and research institutions worldwide. In addition, Simcyp’s in-house expertise includes scientific consultancy, software development, project-related consulting, and educational programs on a global scale.

To honor research excellence and support the scientific community, the Simcyp Consortium annually presents two awards. These awards recognize the ‘Most Informative Scientific Report’ and the ‘Most Effective Teaching Application’ using the Simcyp Simulator. Award recipients receive financial support from Simcyp to further their contributions to science and education.

Simcyp Student Chapter: Empowering Future Pharmaceutical Scientists

At Certara, we understand the importance of educating the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists in modern modeling and simulation techniques. The Simcyp Student Chapter is a quarterly meeting designed to foster collaboration among young pharmaceutical scientists. It allows students with a Simcyp academic research license to present their research, share feedback, and discuss challenges. While Certara will assist with organizing these sessions, they will be primarily student-led, with elected Chairs and Chair-Elects managing activities.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Student Chapter, joining, or taking on a leadership role, please email: simcyp.support@certara.com.
